A public lecture exploring the life and ideas of Roger Williams, a seventeenth-century Charterhouse scholar who crossed the Atlantic and helped shape the foundations of what became the State of Rhode Island. The talk will examine Williams’ radical advocacy for the separation of church and state and consider how his thinking influenced civic life and law on both sides of the Atlantic.
The lecture will be given by The Rev'd Professor Maggi Dawn, a theologian and author with extensive academic and pastoral experience in the UK and the USA. Professor Dawn will trace Williams’ biography and intellectual development, place his work in historical context, and reflect on its modern significance for religious freedom and public life.
The event includes a lecture in the Great Chamber followed by a drinks reception. It is presented by The Charterhouse and is open to members of the public with a ticket.
Tickets cost £24, or £20 for concessions.
