Want to read terrain like a pro? Join a hands-on contour masterclass to turn map symbols into clear 3D mental maps, build confident mountain navigation, and practise in small groups with expert coaching — perfect for boosting outdoor skills and uni/career routes.

This hands-on contour masterclass is designed to help participants understand what contour lines really mean and how they shape the landscape. The session focuses on turning map symbols into a clear mental picture of hills, valleys, ridges and other terrain features, making navigation feel more visual and intuitive.

It is a practical outdoor skills workshop aimed at building confidence when using maps in mountain terrain. The activity is kept to a small workshop ratio, so there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions, learn by doing, and get support while developing navigation skills.

The session is short and accessible, making it suitable for young people and adults who want to improve their understanding of contour maps and move beyond basic map reading. It is run in person at Plas y Brenin, the National Outdoor Centre.
