UCL’s Particle Physics Masterclass invites Year 12 students and their teachers to explore the world of experimental particle physics with one of the country’s most active research groups. It is part of an annual outreach programme run by the UCL Faculty of Mathematical & Physical Sciences.
The day includes short talks by research physicists, discussion sessions, and hands-on activities. Participants can learn about the Large Hadron Collider, the search for and discovery of the Higgs boson, and the properties of neutrinos, alongside other topics at the frontiers of particle physics research.
Students also use computers to study real particle collisions from the ATLAS experiment and compare their results with students at other universities across Europe in a video conference led by scientists at CERN. The event is designed to give young people a first-hand look at current particle physics research and the kinds of questions physicists are working on today.
