The UCL Summer School in Ancient Philosophy is a five-day in-person programme held at University College London that explores major themes and thinkers of ancient philosophy. The course addresses questions such as the origins of the world, the nature of happiness, and the best form of government, following the enquiries of ancient philosophers and examining their continuing relevance today.
Students receive four classes each day (scheduled between 10:30am and 3:30pm). Teaching includes lectures, close reading of texts, and debates; texts are studied in translation, with some classes offered in the original language.
Students are assigned to teaching groups of normally not more than 15-20 people, grouped by similar levels of prior knowledge. Tutors are experienced teachers of ancient philosophy from the London area and beyond.
