University of St Andrews Sustainable Development Summer Study Course

The University of St Andrews Sustainable Development summer study course is an interdisciplinary programme led by the School of Geography and Sustainable Development. It gives students an overview of the School’s key debates and research interests, with a focus on the principles and practices of sustainable development.

Participants explore scientific and conceptual approaches to sustainability and discuss themes such as justice, security, and how the UN Sustainable Development Goals can be implemented in practical and equitable ways. The course also introduces a range of disciplines and research methods connected to sustainable development, drawing on geography, political science, sociology, and environmental management.

Learning is active and hands-on, with seminars, lab work, group work, short field trips, and a small group project on a sustainable development theme of the student’s choice. Students also develop academic skills such as data collection, analysis, argument-building, and presentation.

Successful participants receive an official certificate from the University of St Andrews.
