An illustrated talk traces three women psychiatrists connected with Chester - from the city’s first female psychiatrists to a consultant practising today. Explore their stories through research, hospital history and Dr Sumita Prabhakaran’s journey into medicine and current role.
This in-person illustrated talk brings together three speakers to explore women psychiatrists connected with Chester. The session looks back at the first two female psychiatrists to work in the city and then moves to the experience of a female psychiatrist practising in Chester today.
Carol Coles, an independent researcher, will present her findings on Dr Anna Lilian “Leila” Muncaster, the first female doctor to work at the Chester Asylum. Professor Claire Chatterton will then discuss Dr Isabella Anne Gillespie, the second female doctor to work at the Cheshire County Mental Hospital and the first female psychiatrist to take on the demanding role of Deputy Medical Superintendent and later acting Medical Superintendent.
The event concludes with Dr Sumita Prabhakaran, Consultant Psychiatrist with the Cheshire & Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, who will outline her own journey into medicine and her current role. All are welcome, and booking is encouraged for seating, refreshments and any last-minute changes.
