Explore Roman Pergamon through research led by the German Archaeological Institute. Professor Dr Felix Pirson connects Hadrian’s visit and Galen’s work to the city’s culture and economy, with findings including previously unknown monuments such as Pergamon’s amphitheatre.
Professor Dr Felix Pirson delivers the 2026 Green Lecture on the ancient city of Pergamon and its surrounding landscape in the Roman Imperial period. The talk explores how Hadrian’s visit in 129 AD, the life and work of Galen, and the city’s wider historical significance help illuminate the culture, society and economy of Roman Asia Minor.
The lecture also draws on ongoing archaeological research led since 2019 by the German Archaeological Institute and its partners. It highlights findings on human-environment interaction, the relationship between urban and rural areas, and previously unknown monuments, including the amphitheatre of Pergamon.
Sponsored by the Hellenic Society as part of the 2026 Green Lectures, this event will be of interest to anyone keen on classics, archaeology and the ancient Mediterranean world.
