Use current headlines to analyse how media coverage frames migration and belonging, then compare examples across different platforms. Build vocabulary for visual and textual analysis in an interactive discussion about who gets to speak and participate in society.
This live online university webinar explores how media and communications shape society and culture. Using current headlines as a starting point, the session introduces students to contemporary issues in communications and examines the ways media coverage can frame public understanding of migration and belonging.
Students will analyse examples from different media platforms and build vocabulary linked to media studies, visual analysis and textual analysis. The discussion also considers wider questions about communication and power, including who gets to participate, speak and belong in society, and how political responses can be legitimised and normalised.
The session is designed to be interactive and discussion-based, with students able to take part from a classroom or from home. It is aimed at pre-university students aged 16+ who are interested in Media, Sociology and related subjects.
