Explore how physics, chemistry and engineering shape everyday materials through lectures, lab sessions and problem-solving. Then take on a competitive group project simulating the commercial side of scientific research, stay at an Oxford college and visit a major UK research centre.
This residential Insight into University course introduces students to Materials Science, an interdisciplinary subject that draws on physics, chemistry and engineering to create and improve the materials used in everyday life. The programme is designed to give a flavour of undergraduate study and show how materials research links to areas such as aerospace, biomedical applications, ceramics, nano technology and polymers.
Students take part in a mix of lectures, laboratory sessions, problem-solving activities and a competitive group project that simulates the commercial side of scientific research. They also stay in one of Oxford University’s colleges and visit a major UK research centre, giving them a broader view of academic life and cutting-edge materials research.
The course is aimed at students with a strong interest in the subject and a solid academic background.
