The University of Plymouth Faculty of Health work experience programme offers school students a taster of life as a student on medical, dental, biomedical sciences and healthcare science courses. The programme is aimed at students in Year 10 and above from the South West (Cornwall including the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Dorset and Somerset) and gives hands-on workshops, lab tours, clinical skills demonstrations, group projects, talks and presentations tailored to each discipline.
Activities vary by pathway and have included simulated dental clinical sessions, alginate impressions and rubber dams for dentistry; lab tours, microscopy and physiology workshops for biomedical science; and problem-based learning, anatomy and clinical skills sessions, UCAT and MMI interview practice for medicine. Sessions are delivered in-person on the University of Plymouth main campus and (for some medicine/biomedical sessions) at the John Bull Building at Derriford; transport to Derriford is included in the programme where applicable.
Applications for the programme open in September 2025 and close on 30 January 2026. Applicants are asked to complete the programme application form and return it to meddent-outreach@plymouth.ac.uk. Places are limited and applicants will be notified once applications have been processed.
