Want a head start on university life? Join Access to Sheffield to explore campus life, build confidence, teamwork and problem-solving skills, and connect with academics—opening pathways to higher education for underrepresented students.

Access to Sheffield (Y9-11) is a university outreach programme for pupils in Years 9 to 11 who have the potential to go to university and are from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education. It introduces participants to the University of Sheffield and helps them explore what student life is like, while building confidence, problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Across the programme, students are invited to the university nine times over the course of Years 9, 10 and 11. Activities include mini-lectures, subject taster sessions, campus tours, careers exploration, and practical workshops.

The programme also helps pupils understand how GCSE and post-16 choices can open up different routes into higher education and future careers. A key feature is the overnight Student Experience residential, where participants stay in university accommodation and take part in activities designed to develop independence and social skills.

Some schools may also offer student mentoring in Years 9 and 10, with 1:1 support delivered in school. The programme is accredited by Skills Builder as an Impact Level 4 programme.
