Want a taste of uni life? Join University of Surrey's free 4‑day residential summer school to study Business, Engineering Sciences or Veterinary Medicine at degree level, build skills, boost your uni application and connect with peers. Apply by 29 March 2026.
The University of Surrey Residential Summer Schools (part of the Surrey Scholars programme) offer Year 12 students the chance to experience studying a subject at university degree level. The 2026 residential programme is free to attend and provides a short on-campus experience across three subject strands: Business, Engineering Sciences and Veterinary Medicine.
There are 100 places in total shared across the strands. During the four-day, three-night programme participants will take part in sample lectures, workshops, research projects, sports tasters and evening social activities.
The programme includes overnight accommodation and three meals per day; transport costs are covered on request. The residential summer school is targeted at Year 12 students from under-represented backgrounds who attend non-selective state schools or colleges in the UK and meet the specified widening-participation criteria.
Applications for the 2026 Summer Schools open on 2026-01-19 and close on 2026-03-29. Applicants are encouraged to use the Surrey Scholars application form to register interest and apply; places are allocated based on eligibility and capacity of the chosen subject strand.

2026 Residential Summer School
Location
- Must be a Year 12 student
- Attend a non-selective state school or college in the United Kingdom
- Places allocated to students from currently under-represented groups in higher education
- Applicants must meet at least one of the widening-participation criteria (examples below)
- From low participation neighbourhoods (POLAR4 quintiles 1 and 2)
- From an area of high deprivation (IMD quintiles 1 and 2)
- From a low participation area (TUNDRA LSOA, quintiles 1 and 2)
- Eligible for free school meals in the last six years
- Eligible for a 16-19 bursary (or equivalent)
- Care-experienced young people
- Young people with a diagnosed disability or long-term health condition
- Young carers
- Forced migrants (refugees, asylum seekers)
- Estranged students (studying without family support)
- Parent/carer has served in the armed forces or reserves
- From Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups
- From Gypsy, Roma, Traveller communities
- Those who have suffered significant disruption due to illness or personal circumstance
- Places awarded based on meeting eligibility criteria and capacity of chosen subject strand
Free to attend. Overnight accommodation and three meals per day are provided for all participants. Transport costs are covered where requested.
