Trace the Derwent Valley Light Railway from its 1899 concept through closure and revival as a heritage railway, with Tony Simons. Explore engineering projects completed, under way and still to come, alongside the volunteer work keeping it running.

Join Tony Simons for a talk exploring the history of the Derwent Valley Light Railway, from its original concept in 1899 through to its opening in 1913, its closure in 1981 and its later revival as a heritage railway. The session is presented as a York Society of Engineers Lecture and looks at the railway’s development over time, as well as the questions that have shaped its story.

The talk also considers some of the engineering projects completed by the railway team, those currently under way, and others still to come. It is relevant to Mechanical Engineering and Railway Engineering, and will be of interest to anyone who wants to understand both the history and the ongoing volunteer work that keeps the railway running.
