Writer Courttia Newland explores how science fiction draws on heritage and belief, and reimagines the genre through underrepresented perspectives. Hear how authors research, develop their craft across works and respond to critique at this free in-person talk, with wheelchair access and a hearing loop.

Part of the University of York’s Science: Fictions, Faiths and Futures conference, this public lecture looks at science fiction as a way of exploring humanity, culture and belief as well as the cosmos. Courttia Newland will consider how writers draw on heritage and varied belief systems to create credible stories, and how science fiction can be reimagined from perspectives that have historically been underrepresented in the genre.

The event focuses on how authors research, develop their craft across multiple works, and respond to critique before and after publication. It is a free in-person talk at the University of York, open to alumni, staff, students and the public, with booking required.

The venue is Room LMB/002A in the Law and Sociology Building on Campus East, and the event has wheelchair access and a hearing loop.
