Examine charters, coins and chronicles to reassess how Offa expanded Mercian power and reshaped early medieval England. Hear Rory Naismith challenge the criticism that built around Offa after his death. Join in person or online, with a wine reception beforehand.
Part of the University of York's York Medieval Lecture series, this talk explores the reign of King Offa of Mercia and his impact on early medieval England. Rory Naismith of the University of Cambridge will examine how Offa expanded Mercian power across much of southern England and reshaped the way his kingdom was governed.
Drawing on charters, coins, chronicles and other historical evidence, the lecture reassesses Offa's legacy and challenges the criticism that accumulated around him after his death. It offers a fresh look at one of the most significant rulers of the early medieval period, and at the political possibilities of Anglo-Saxon England.
The event is open to alumni, staff, students and the public, with both in-person and online attendance available. A wine reception will be held before the lecture, and booking is required for attendance.
