Coinciding with the Football World Cup, the Migration Museum and artist Nicole Chui lead a participatory embroidery workshop exploring football, migration, race, and belonging. Participants will use hand embroidery to stitch onto football shirts, weaving personal journeys of movement and identity into wearable pieces.
While stitching, the group will hold an open conversation about national identity and what it means to feel at home on and off the pitch. Bring your own football or sports shirt to personalise; participants will be able to take their shirts home and wear them to the finals.
The session is fast-paced and tailored for beginner to intermediate embroiderers. Materials such as needles, thread, hoops, and sketching supplies are provided, and additional embroidery kits will be available to purchase from the artist after the event.
This workshop is led by Nicole Chui, a London-based embroidery artist whose practice engages football culture, fashion, ESEA identity and protest. The event forms part of Whitechapel Gallery's Backyard Biennial programming and is intended for adult participants (18+).
