Get hands-on experience of council work across different teams, building skills and confidence while exploring the area that interests you most. Choose your preferred team before submitting a request form.
Wigan Council offers work experience placements for local residents and for students studying in Wigan borough schools or colleges. The placements are designed to give participants hands-on experience of council work, help build skills and confidence, and support future education or employment goals.
Opportunities are available across different council teams, and applicants are asked to choose the team they are most interested in before submitting a request form.
The council supports a range of applicants, including school pupils, college students, university students, graduates and care leavers. School placements are usually managed through the school, while college and university students may be directed to their tutor or placement co-ordinator.
Other local residents can also make an ad hoc request, and the council will consider placements where possible.
Placements are unpaid and all requests must be submitted at least six weeks before the proposed start date. Each placement is subject to a risk assessment, and the council asks applicants not to contact services directly.
The page also notes that the council is developing paid internship opportunities and offers apprenticeship and traineeship routes separately.
Requests accepted throughout the year
All work experience placements are unpaid.
