Write an original short fiction (max 1,000 words) using a provided title, line of dialogue and object after registration. Have your work reviewed by postgraduate and academic judges, compete for shortlist, runner-up and winner places, and win monetary awards.

Prize: Winner: £500 and an invitation to the Goldsmiths Prize ceremony. Runner-up: £100. All shortlisted entries receive a small prize.

The Young Writer competition is a short-fiction writing contest run by Goldsmiths, University of London. Entrants are invited to submit an original piece of short fiction of no more than 1,000 words. Once registered, participants will be given a set of required elements (a title, a line of dialogue, and an object) which must be included in their story.

Submissions are reviewed by postgraduate students in English and Creative Writing who produce a longlist; a judging panel of staff, alumni and recruitment staff then selects a shortlist, runner-up and winner. Prizes include monetary awards and an invitation to the Goldsmiths Prize ceremony for the winner, with smaller awards for the runner-up and shortlisted entries.

The competition is open to young writers aged 16–18 who are currently studying at a UK school or college. Entrants should register to receive the competition elements and submit their story via the competition registration process; full entry terms and conditions and contact details (outreach@gold.
